In the October 5, 1850 issue of The Lancet, Mary K is pictured following a spinal injury. After withstanding a concussion, a hump appeared on her back. It was determined that it was due to inflammation around the spine despite the fact that Mary K still had full use of her arms and legs and apparently a great deal of luck.

Notice that although the injury appears on Mary's back, and perhaps could have necessitated a profile view to demonstate two-dimensionally, her chest is also included. This exposition seems especially out of place beside her still-bonneted head and her clutching of her garmet. Whatever modesty she attempted to keep was unnesscarily bared in this illustration.
