Images of women in The Lancet could be so few and far between that often their biggest appearances were in the advertisements. Here, in the Septmber 3, 1853 issue, a woman and man are envisioned in an artificial eye advertisment. Though the woman is gaily attired in the fashions of the day, her face is quite homely, perhaps to emphasize the effect of this missing orb. Whatever the depiction is meant to do, it offers a unique intersection of femininity, disability, and medicial treatments in the Victorian age.
